It is with profound sadness that I inform you of the untimely passing of Mark Hughes, our founder, president and friend. Mark died in his sleep at home, Sunday, May 21, 2000. As a visionary, Mark spent his life dedicated to a dream; a dream that has been unstoppable for over twenty years. Our Board of Directors has charged me, together with the rest of our senior management team, with immediately implementing strategies that will continue to enhance our business organization. Mark's guiding principle was his loyalty to Herbalife's distributors, customers, employees and shareholders worldwide. We will continue to observe that principle. Mark always identified himself as the #1 Distributor. Nothing made him prouder. Herbalife has always believed that it has offered an unparalleled opportunity to people everywhere. The support of our worldwide distributor base will remain our number one priority. Mark drilled this concept into our entire management team; it is our charter. In conjunction with this charter, the Board of Directors has appointed me to the role of acting President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. I will continue to work with the Executive Committee composed of Samantha Faulkner, Bill Garnet, Timothy Gerrity, Carol Hannah, Conrad Lee Klein, Jacque Lueth, Michael Rosen and Robert Sandler, to guide the direction and future of our great company. I am confident that with your support and dedication we will continue to fulfill Mark's dream. We all share in the loss of our great leader and hold close the memories of a great man. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hughes family in this time of great sorrow. For those of you wishing to honor Mark, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Herbalife Family Foundation. I share your grief and sadness and can assure you that the company Mark built will continue to prosper and grow. In honor of the legacy that Mark Hughes has created Herbalife's offices worldwide will be closed on Friday and Saturday. A memorial service for Mr. Hughes will be held at 2PM on Saturday, May 27, 2000 at the Shrine Auditorium, 665 W. Jefferson Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90007. (Nasdaq:HERBA; HERBB) today announced that Mark Hughes, its president and founder, died in his sleep at his Malibu, Calif., home Sunday, May 21. Mr. Hughes, 44, founded Herbalife in 1980. In a prepared statement, the company said that it is deeply saddened by Mr. Hughes' passing, and it wants to reassure all of Herbalife's constituents, including employees, distributors, customers, shareholders and vendors, that plans are underway to ensure that Herbalife will continue with the spirit and vitality of the founder's vision.
